Jersey City Mystery Safes - My9 New Jersey

Jersey City Mystery Safes

Posted: Updated:
Jersey City, New Jersey (My9NJ) - Located down a tight hallway, through Mayor Fulop’s office and into a back closet in Jersey City’s City Hall are two safes that were recently discovered.

The Mayor’s administration found them earlier this year buried behind boxes and clutter.

“It was a storage room and it was blocked and filled with all sorts of clutter, so when we got in here we were exploring it and we asked previous mayors if they ever opened it, and they said they didn’t open it, they didn’t know how,” Mayor Fulop said.

After much anticipation, the safes were finally opened yesterday and to people’s surprise they were empty, except for one extension cord.

The safes were installed in the wall of City Hall during the infamous Mayor Frank "Boss" Hague's reign of Jersey City, from 1917 to 1947. His legacy has even been characterized in HBO's series Boardwalk Empire.

“It was put in in the 1940’s and we have no record of it being opened since 1949, that’s kind of what the curiosity was and any living mayor we have reached out to, hadn’t opened it, didn’t know how to open it, and didn’t know anyone who had opened it,” Mayor Fulop said.

Because of Jersey City’s interesting legacy of corruption, the mystery surrounding the safe was thought to have possibly been the door into the hidden world of Jersey City.

"We didn’t know. We were asking people and people said anything from Hoffa’s remains, to money, to air, and I guess air won,” Mayor Fulop said.
