NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

New Yorkers spent the day after Christmas filling stores ready to do some serious shopping. But it wasn't only major clothing or electronics stores that had cash registers ringing. Strand bookstore in Union Square was standing room only.

If the day after Christmas looks busy, owner Fred Bass, 85, says you should have seen the day before.

"We're 25 percent above any top day we've ever had, and the other two days prior we're running about 12.5 percent higher than... our best day ever in the 85 years of our business," Bass said.

Besides being a New York institution, Strand is also a story in defying the odds. In this age of kindles and tablet readers, strand is among the few independent booksellers still turning a major profit doing what book stores still standing do: sell actual books to eager readers.

"I think the e-market hit a different market and people than we have and I think it's helped us too," Bass said. "I think it's stimulated people into more reading. It's easier to access books, then they get an idea and they go further than that."

A recent online survey of millennials 18 to 24 found that 62 percent preferred printed books over e-books. That stat is a surprise to many, but not to Maya Garcia.

"I think there's a lot of power in owning a book," Garcia said. "I think seeing how many books someone has and just having that and giving a child a book. I think there's something really powerful about that.

But the Strand has found some common ground, if you will, with the electronic devices. You can buy their books online and have them sent directly to you.
