Families Assess Christmas Night Fire Damage In South Philly

PHILADELPHIA -

Several families in South Philly are picking up more than just wrapping paper after a Christmas night blaze damaged several homes.

The fire damaged four homes on the 2500 block of South Percy Street and completely ruined Christmas for those families.

As crews began cleaning up, the families are focusing on the positives, like the fact that no one was hurt.

"Everything is gone, everything is gone. Nobody from the three houses have nothing left," said Remy Guirguis.

Guirguis was enjoying the holiday at his parents' house when he got a phone call from neighbors.

"First I thought they were joking. I've been living here for a while and nothing happens like that. Then I just ran, and when I came here to my house it was just destroyed," he said.

He says the three most badly damaged homes on the block were empty when the blaze erupted.

A fourth home where Munjed Soof and his family were celebrating wasn't.

"It's not easy to see your house getting damaged and you are watching doing nothing," Soof said.

He doesn't know if he'll be staying here because the smoke inside the house has created a health concern for his family.

Soof has a machine in his living room that's supposed to clean out the harmful inhalants in three days.

"If you smoke a cigarette it will kill you, with cancer. What about this now," he said.

Neighbors tell FOX 29 News a propane tank exploded at the house closest to the corner, accelerating the fire.

It's a fire that left everything Guirguis has saved over the past 25 years, up in smoke.

"There is the stuff I've been having from back home, from Egypt I had it with me. There is stuff I just grow up, there is stuff I used to have as a kid, and I had it with me and it's just gone. I have nothing of mine, because everything I have gone, its means a lot to me," he said.

Fire investigators say what caused the blaze and exactly where it started remain under investigation.

The displaced families are either staying with relatives or have been put up by the American Red Cross.
