Medical Marijuana Help For 2 Year-Old

Posted: Updated:
Scotch Plains, New Jersey (My9NJ) - For almost a year, 2 year old Vivian Wilson has been battling with the state of New Jersey over a prescription for an edible form of medical marijuana to help treat her severe seizures.

The Wilson’s have battled with Governor Christie and New Jersey Legislators to make available the special marijuana that Vivian needs.

Now this story apparently has a bittersweet ending. Vivian will get the edible marijuana that she needs, but the Wilson’s are going to have to move to Colorado for her to get it.

Vivian’s father, Brian Wilson, discussed the ongoing struggles that his family has endured.

“We always knew that Colorado was an eventuality that would probably come to bearing because of the slowness of the law in New Jersey. We recently tried to get legislation passed that would allow reciprocity in New Jersey which would allow us to bring in meds from out of state because we still don’t have what we need in New Jersey. Even Christie has come out and said I’m not going to pass any new legislation, so all the finds are there that it’s not going to happen anytime soon,” he said.

A few months ago Vivian’s father confronted the governor at one of his press conferences while wearing a shirt that pleaded for help for his daughter. He has not heard from the governor since.

“That was kind of force contact because he refused, back then during the summer, he refused any efforts to try and have a meeting or a talk. That’s why I ended up going there. There has been no contact. The only thing close to contact was when he heard about the new bill being passed and he said absolutely not, these are just people trying to legalize and chip away at this in every way they can. We got to save Vivian in any way we can,” Wilson said.

The company MagicalButter.com helped donate money for the Wilson’s moving expenses.

“The owner just mentioned the fact that he kind of wanted to start up a charity to help families in this situation because it’s a heartbreaking situation,” Wilson said.

While the move to Colorado seems like it may be the only choice right now to help with Vivian’s seizures, the family was reluctant to pack up and move out of the Garden State.

“I am upset about it. Moving is very difficult and very stressful. We have all our family here and all our friends here and our doctors, support infrastructure, everything is in New Jersey. It’s going to be an ordeal to go through but in the end it’s what we have to do for Vivian,” Wilson said.

The town of Elmwood Park relies on about 75 to 100 volunteer firefighters for emergencies.  Russell Fenn, IV is one of those volunteer firefighters. He was driving the department’s only ladder truck and crashed it into utility poles.  Police charged Fenn with driving under the influence and said that his blood alcohol level was twice the legal limit.
