South Philly Residents Rally To Take Back Neighborhood

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA -

We're taking back our neighborhood. That's the message residents in South Philadelphia are sending out tonight.

This all started after one woman's 11-year-old son was mugged over the summer. This weekend an eight year old was hurt during a robbery at this convenience store. Tonight, South Philly neighbors are pushing for more community policing, and they're doing it all online.

"Criminals should not be able to get away with this," said resident Carol Lanni.

A violent robbery inside a South Philadelphia convenience store has people in the community like Carol Lanni outraged.

"It's a well organized crime ring happening in South Philly, and it needs to be stopped. We can't be prisoners," she said.

Police tell FOX 29 that a man went into Joe's Food Market on South Juniper Street, grabbed the woman behind the counter, pressed her face against a sink and demanded money. The victim's eight-year-old daughter not only witnessed the crime, but was hurt too.

It happened around 12:45 on Saturday afternoon.

"As the girl was leaving he grabbed the girl by the face and pushed her aside," said Captain Michael Ryan of the Third District.

"I have a child that age and it infuriates me," said Carol Lanni. "I think perpetrators would be deterred of the situations if more people were going to be involved and it wasn't going to be tolerated."

Lanni's been pushing for more community policing in South Philly ever since her 11 year old son was mugged back in August. She started a Facebook page called "Taking Our South Philly Streets Back."

It's gotten more than 7,000 likes in five months.

"To raise awareness for the community to get involved to be a helping hand for the police," Carol Lanni said.

Police tell us that it's been working.

"People are more aware, especially if it's in their area. They reach out to us and contact us," said Capt. Ryan.

Lanni hopes this trend will spread citywide.

"Especially for our kids. They're innocent. It's bad enough adults become victims and now when it's been targeted on a child, it's not tolerable," said Lanni.

As for the robbery, detectives are still looking for the suspect.
