Freehold Raceway Accident - My9 New Jersey

Freehold Raceway Accident

Posted: Updated:
Freehold Twp., N.J.(My9NJ.com) - A freak accident at Freehold Raceway has people asking if anyone should be held accountable for racing on an icy, muddy track.

The accident that was caught on video happened when the pace car that starts the races lost control and began spinning around until it hit all but the first horse running on the track.

As bad as the video looks, only one jockey was seriously injured, with broken ribs and a punctured lung. None of the horses were seriously injured.

Horse owner Kathy Breslin said that there are often more things that go into a race and an owner’s decision to go forward with the competition. “I spent the money to ship my horse there; I spent the money for all the training and care so it is frustrating because I spent all this money to get there, and now I can’t compete. But the flip side of that is if something happened to my horse then I’m done indefinitely,” she said.

The track conditions in the video look bad, but four previous races had already been run with no incidents and Freehold spokespeople maintain that nobody complained about the conditions.

Another point of contention is why Freehold Raceway would use a rear wheel drive Lincoln car on a muddy, slick track when most tracks apparently use SUV’s.

Thankfully it appears that they dodged a bullet but people are still asking if anyone is at fault and what, if any, policies should be put in place to protect against future problems.
