New York collection added to ancestry website

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) - Ellis Island was one of the first stops many of our ancestors made in America and many of the records are now searchable on a family tree building site.

Quinton Atkinson from Ancestry.com says, "There's about 10 million records for NYC specifically which ads to our collection for 40 million records that are already on ancestry.com."

The newly added New York City records include birth records, marriage records, and death records.

If you suspect you had an ancestor, you could find out more information about them on the ancestry.

You can find an entry that tells your their birthday info, marriage, and death.  You can do that for free. From there you can go to the NYC archive website where you can purchase an actual copy image of that certificate.

For birth records you can go back to 1878 up through 1909.  Marriage go as far back as 1866-1957.  Death records can go from 1862-1948.

This is a new discovery.  Many people came through Ellis island, millions, they stayed in city until they gathered the means to travel west, maybe then got married in those two years.

Quinton Atkinson is the website's content manager and teamed up with the New York City department of records. Volunteers from an Italian and German geological group created the index over the past ten years.

Eileen Flannelly, Commissioner for NYC Department of Records, says the project took 10 years.

"Our requests come in from all over the world," Flannelly says.
