Search On For Shooter Who Critically Wounded Student On Widener's Campus

Posted: Updated:

Widener University is in student critical but stable condition after being shot Monday night on the school's Chester campus, and a search for the shooter continues.

Police are reviewing surveillance video to try to develop information. They are stressing at this point that this does not appear to be a random shooting. The latest update from police is that the victim was shot while sitting inside a car. The car was later towed away from the scene for investigation.

"The suspect is still at large. Chester Police have secured the campus, and Chester Police believe there is no active shooter on campus. All indications are that this was not a random act of violence," Widener University's website is now saying.

The victim was rushed to Crozer Chester Medical Center.

Authorities urged everyone to stay indoors through the night until 6 a.m. As of right now, officials say a regular class schedule will be in effect on Tuesday.

The shooting occurred around 8:45 p.m. near the Schwartz Athletic Center, located on the 900 block of East 17th Street.

School officials said late Monday night that the family of the wounded student, who was not identified, were notified.

"Our thoughts are with the student and his family at this time," a school statement said.

There's no word on what might have led to the shooting.

FOX 29's Jennifer Joyce reported from campus Tuesday morning that she has seen a steady stream of both Chester police officers and campus safety officers, both in cars and on foot, looking for this suspect. Police K-9s are also helping with the search.

Anyone who has any information about the shooting is being urged to call 610-447-7908.

Police say it has been at least 15 years since they have had an incident like this on the campus.

We will have more information on this story as it becomes available.
