Creating Super Bowl Cocktails!

Posted: Updated:

Medicinal cocktails!

Polar vortex, icy roads, endless traffic jams ...pfft! This is winter in the tri-state area, and nothing really stops us from experiencing a great event, like the Super bowl in New Jersey!

So bundle up, make sure you have a sturdy car, and enjoy. And of course, it's not a Super bowl celebration without a great spread of food and libations.

Here at Valerie's New Jersey, we came upon a most unusual mixologist. Warren Bobrow has a family legacy that is quite interesting (you have to listen to the podcast to learn more!) Drawing from his background, and marrying his skills with spirits, he has written a book titled, "Apothecary Cocktails" which features 75 traditional and newly created recipes for medicinally-themed cocktails.

As an expert in his field, Warren's suggestions for great places to go for cocktails include: SM23 in Morristown, Chakra in Paramus, and Ryland Inn in Whitehouse, and in NYC: Milk and Honey, Ward III, Otto’s Shrunken Head, Pouring Ribbons and Freeman's. In Brooklyn, Warren recommends Seraphina and the Clover Club.

Here's a special cocktail created for Valerie's New Jersey by Warren himself:

Valerie’s New Jersey Super bowl Cocktail

(before preparing: sear or grill a pineapple. break it down into 2 inch by 2 inch thick rounds, sear or grill until marks are formed on the flesh of the pineapple, then let cool)

Ingredients:

2 oz. NJ Rum from Jersey Artisan Distilling

1 oz. freshly squeezed orange juice

1/2 oz. freshly squeezed lemon juice

1/2 oz. freshly squeezed grapefruit juice

2-3 grilled chunks of pineapple 2x2 in dimension

Angostura Bitters

Perrier Sparkling Natural Mineral Water

Preparation:

Grill the pineapple chunks (I like mine 2x2 or smaller) let cool

Add 2-3 pineapple chunks to a Boston Shaker

Muddle to release their secrets with a wooden muddler

Add the rum and the orange, lemon and grapefruit juices

Fill the shaker 3/4 with ice

Cover and shake like crazy for 15 second or so

Strain into a rocks glass with one cube of hand cut ice

Drip 2-3 drops of Angostura Bitters ..and serve

Also, find out about an art studio for your kids, Fiddler on the Roof in Montvale, and a special supper to celebrate the patron poet of Scotland. Plus, Valerie's New Jersey Pick of the Week!
