MINEOLA, N.Y. (AP) - More passengers rode the Long Island Rail Road in 2013 than any commuter rail line in the country, according to the Metropolitan Transportation Authority. The agency runs the New York City transit system, as well as the LIRR and Metro-North commuter line that serves passengers north of the city.

MTA figure show that in 2013, the LIRR carried 83,384,250 riders. That is about 5,700 more than Metro-North's 83,378,505.

Metro-North had held the No. 1 spot since 2011, when the LIRR dropped to No. 2 for the first time in decades.

Newsday reported that retiring Metro-North president Howard Permut blames the drop on several major service disruptions throughout the year.

Some of the LIRR's increase was for passengers going to the new Barclays Center in Brooklyn.
