Can your employer track your every move?

Posted: Updated:

It's just a fact of life in 2014. Seems like someone or something could always be watching you. So should your employer be involved in that Big Brother mix? Electronics giant Hitachi thinks so. It has developed the Hitachi Business Microscope, a fancy way of saying employee tracker.

The Hitachi device is about the size of an ID badge. Employees would be required to wear the device, which sends back a signal to management telling them where you go and who you talk to.

But there's some concern about the legality of a device like this.

Joseph Sanscrainte, a privacy attorney, said he understands Hitachi's pitch that the device could improve employee productivity. But he said that requiring it could be a violation of civil rights.

Companies already have some level of Orewllian authority. For example, taxi drivers are tracked by the GPS in their cars. And work-issued phones and computers can and usually are tracked, but this badge is a bit more personal.
