Hoboken Shut Out On Rail Extension

Posted: Updated:
Residents of Hoboken are in luck! A new announcement by NJ Transit and the Rockefeller Group highlights their plans to extend the light rail system within the city. There's one problem however, the city of Hoboken was not informed about such a plan. In fact, the mayor’s office is filing an OPRA claim to get more information about the newly struck deal. OPRA, or open public records act, will allow the mayor’s office to get full details about the project and what it entails for the city.

This filing comes as a surprise to many residents because you would think that the mayor’s office would have access to infrastructure development information for their own city. 3rd Ward Councilman Michael Russo explained his concerns about the lack of access the city has to its own development projects.

"I understand the frustration from the administration that I most certainly would want to know exactly what is going on there too if I was the mayor and as a city councilman I feel the same way. I most certainly want to know what their plans are and even if it’s in that preliminary discussion, I still would like to know what the ideas are," Russo said.

Although these development projects usually bring positive change to a certain area, it’s interesting to note how some industries have the power to bypass local government for their own developmental projects.

Yesterday was Earth Day and people all across New Jersey took time to celebrate Mother Earth. Founder of the Astor Free Community Garden in Jersey City, Tinina Bland, organized a day of gardening with some of the city’s hardest working two and three year olds. “We reach out throughout the entire community, we grow collard greens, mustard greens, turnip greens, four different types of tomatoes, watermelon, pumpkin and this year we’re introducing fruit,” Bland explained.
