NYC mayor shrewdly crafts everyman political image

Posted: Updated:

NEW YORK (AP) - Bill de Blasio's first few weeks at the helm of New York City have offered a look at a mayor skilled in the art of political stagecraft.

He welcomed New Yorkers to Gracie Mansion, telling them that the opulent mayoral mansion was "the people's house."

He cheerfully shoveled snow for the TV cameras. And he opted against Super Bowl tickets because they were too expensive.

Experts say the former political operative is using carefully chosen events and images to cultivate the appearance of being an average New Yorker focused on fixing the city's widening income inequality.

But there have been a few missteps, including when he dug into a slice of pizza using a knife and fork instead of his hands, the method preferred by many New Yorkers.
