Firefighter dies battling NJ restaurant blaze

Posted: Updated:

WALLINGTON, N.J. (AP) - Officials say a New Jersey firefighter has died after a fall from a roof while working to put out a fire at a restaurant.

Gregory Barnas, 57, died early Friday morning.

Barnas was cutting a hole in the roof of the restaurant and fell, said fire officials.

The 29-year veteran at the Jersey City Fire Department was also a volunteer at the department in Wallington.

Fire officials say both of the fallen firefighters' sons are also firefighters. Bergen County Prosecutor John Molinelli tells The Associated Press that both sons were on the scene at Akaska Japanese restaurant.

Molinelli says the fire is being investigated but that it does not appear suspicious.
