Former New Jersey Gov. Jon Corzine's son has died. Jeffrey Corzine was 31.

"Mr. Corzine is obviously devastated by this tragic loss," said Steven Goldberg, a spokesman for the ex-governor. "We ask that all respect his family's privacy during this very difficult time."

Goldberg did not elaborate on how, when, or why the younger Corzine died. He was the youngest of three children Corzine had with ex-wife Joanne Corzine.

"My thoughts and prayers are with Governor Corzine, Joanne and the entire Corzine family on the tragic loss of Jeffrey," Gov. Chris Christie said in a statement. " They are both devoted parents and the loss they have suffered is unthinkable. Mary Pat and I send our personal condolences and condolences on behalf of all the people of New Jersey to the Corzine family during these very sad times."

Christie, a Republican, unseated Corzine in the 2009 election.

U.S. Sen. Robert Menendez, D-N.J., who replaced Corzine in the Senate, issued a statement of condolences.

"The pain and sorrow one suffers losing a child is unthinkable," Menendez said in the statement. "I have always known them to be devoted and doting parents. My thoughts and prayers are with them during this difficult time."

Jeffrey Corzine worked as a drug counselor in California, the New York Post reported, citing friends.

Jon Corzine was a Wall Street executive before serving in the U.S. Senate and then as governor. After losing the 2009 election, he returned to finance as CEO of MF Global, which collapsed in 2011.
