A Child’s Perspective On NJ Gun Laws

Posted: Updated:
Trenton, New Jersey (My9NJ) - Nine year-old Shayanne Roberts is a competitive shooter who has been shooting for over four years. She has her own pink rifle she uses for competitions and was recently given a custom AR 15 semi-automatic rifle because the company admires her talents.

“It’s fun and it’s challenging,” Roberts says about her hobby.

Roberts has won numerous awards and is beloved by the National Rifle Association. She recently testified before the New Jersey legislature in an attempt to convince them that new gun legislation won’t reduce crime.

“If it wasn’t against the law, I would’ve brought one of my competition guns with me today to show you it won’t do anything unless someone touches it,” she said at the hearing.

Roberts and her family are one of the thousands of New Jerseyans who could end up being charged with a felony for owning a gun that has a magazine that holds more than 10 rounds if the recently passed law is signed by Governor Christie. Shayanne and her father Dan Roberts decided to discuss her passion and how she got started shooting responsibly.

“I can teach my kids to not stick a fork in an electrical outlet because they’ll get shocked. I can teach my kids not to touch a hot stove because they’ll get burned. I can teach my kids to stay away from a pool because if they don’t know how to swim they can get killed by drowning, but I can’t teach them how to not play with a firearm. It makes no sense,” Dan explained.

He also feels like Shayanne’s confidence has increased due to her success with shooting and that she has a protective mentality to make sure she takes care of her family no matter what the situation. Shayanne says that she knows the rules for handling her weapon.

“Always keep it pointed in a safe direction, never point it at anybody. Always treat a gun like it’s loaded and know what you’re shooting at,” she said.

Shayanne’s goal is to one day get to the Olympics.

On Thursday, Hillary Clinton made her one and only book stop in Ridgewood, New Jersey promoting her memoir, Hard Choices, which details her life as Secretary of State. This one stop ironically was on the same day that Governor Chris Christie was out of town in Iowa on several fundraising stops. Was his absence a coincidence?
