Profile Of Suspect In Bucks Co.Ricin Revenge Plot

Posted: Updated:

A 19-year old Bucks County teen accused of sending a birthday card laced with ricin to a romantic rival is now behind bars facing attempted murder charges.

This is all that's left of Paul McGrath's hallway door after SWAT and HAZMAT teams descended on his neighbor's apartment Wednesday night. That's where 19-year old Nicholas Helman was arrested for allegedly sending a scratch and sniff birthday card containing ricin to a Warminster man who's now dating Helman's ex-girlfriend.

"When he lost her he went off the deep end because he really loved her, she was a cute little blond," McGrath told FOX 29.

McGrath says he was stunned to learn Helman now stands accused of making the toxic substance ricin in his residence at the Eleanor Court Apartment complex in Hatboro. The apartment has been declared unsafe and Helman is now accused of attempted murder and risking a catastrophe.

"Very quiet kid, kept to himself, very polite," McGrath added.

"He's a very nice kid, very quiet, I think there's too much on television that these kids get their hands into or minds into," said Helman's next door neighbor Donna Bickley.

Investigators say one of Helman's co-worker's at Target in Warrington tipped them off to the plot after Helman admitted placing a chemical laced card in the mailbox of his ex-girlfriend's new boyfriend. No one at the young man's home wanted to speak to reporters Thursday.

"I'm just glad he didn't mix up the address numbers," neighbor Bill Bridges told FOX 29. Bridges lives two doors down from the young man allegedly targeted by Helman. He too was stunned by the details of Helman's alleged scheme to get his neighbor.

"That would ruin my day totally," he said. "There's no accounting for nut balls. It's a sick world we live in."

"They had the house taped off and they were here for a few hours that was it," neighbor Lisa Beatty said. She saw all the police activity here when the letter was intercepted at the victim's mailbox on March 7th.

"It's amazing somebody would do that," she said. "It's awful. Over an ex-girlfriend, awful, horrible."

Helman was held without bail and ordered to undergo a psychiatric evaluation. A search warrant for his apartment and garage was not made public.
