Law Firm Clears Christie In Bridgegate Scandal

Posted: Updated:
Trenton, New Jersey (My9NJ) - According to the New York Times, a report is making headlines that has cleared Governor Christie of any wrongdoing in the bridgegate scandal.

The law firm that conducted the investigation was hired by the Christie camp, but the investigation reviewed Governor Christie’s iPhone and telephone records, his government and private emails, and conducted 70 interviews.

It is important to note, however, that three key players in the whole bridgegate debacle refused to be interviewed. Bridget Kelly-former deputy chief of staff, Bill Stepien-former campaign manager, and David Wildstein-former Port Authority administrator were all left out of the investigation.

Save Jersey Blog Editor Matt Rooney chimed in to discuss whether or not the fact the Christie administration hired the law firm who conducted the investigation diminishes from any of the findings.

“No it doesn’t diminish the value of their findings; it just means that you have to take them with a grain of salt. It was never intended to take the place of whatever the U.S. Attorney or the legislature are in the middle of doing, but whenever a company including a government agency has any type of trouble, or if there’s any whiff of wrongdoing, the first thing they need to do is an eternal review, that’s what happens,” he explained.

Does this new investigation have any impact on the key parties who didn’t participate and who are also being investigated regarding their involvement in bridgegate?

“At the end of the day politics always plays into this right? And the U.S Attorney is never gonna say, or the prosecutor is never gonna admit it, but the entire point of a corruption investigation is to get a big fish,” Rooney explained.

He also said that he wouldn’t be surprised if democrats or media outlets come out to try and discredit this report, however, he feels like there is still a silver lining.

“Anything they say against it they also have to say of the legislative committee. The legislative committee’s lawyer is being paid and has a long record of representing Democrats. The legislative committee is also not able to interview the three people: Stepien, Kelly and Wildstein, that weren’t able to be reviewed by Gibson-Dunn, why? Because in that case they were allowing their fourth and fifth amendment rights,” Rooney said.

It's only September, but the big box stores are already putting Christmas trees and apparel out on the shelves and some people say it's just too early for all that stuff!  “I just saw Christmas trees and Christmas decorations and my air conditioner is on at home. So I have no intention of going anywhere near them, I think it's a horrible idea,” one customer said.
