PHILADELPHIA -

The Pennsylvania Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals says it's investigating a hoarding case in North Philadelphia that involves hundreds of cats.

Humane law enforcement officers are reported to be removing 260 felines from a property on the 1600 block of Filmore Street.

According to PSPCA officials, a warrant was executed to remove the cats from what they're calling "unsanitary confinement."

They've begun the process of removing the cats and transporting them to the SPCA's Erie Avenue headquarters for veterinary exams, treatment and shelter.

FOX 29's Thalia Perez reports from the scene that ammonia levels are so high that humane officers are wearing masks so they can breathe while removing cats.

By lunchtime, they had been at it for more than three hours, and they expected the work to take all day.

The organization says in a news release that its "ultimate goal here is to find the cats good homes once it obtains legal custody of them."

Calling itself "the largest no-kill animal shelter in Pennsylvania," the PSPCA says it typically cares for 400 to 500 animals at any given time.

To prepare for more than 260 additional cats, the organization created a temporary shelter onsite with cat carriers and other supplies donated by PetSmart Charities.
