Christie Addresses Bridgegate Investigation and Report Findings

Posted: Updated:
Trenton, New Jersey (My9NJ) - While Governor Christie took to the national airwaves to sit-down and talk to Diana Sawyer of ABC about everything going on in the media, particularly the bridgegate scandal, the law firm that completed the investigation that cleared Christie of all wrongdoing, Gibson, Dunn and Crutcher, held a press conference to discuss their findings.

One key factor to look at in the investigation is that the law firm allegedly had access to both Christie and Lt. Governor Kim Guadagno’s personal phone and e-mail records, which were never subpoenaed by the state legislature. This has apparently given them access to more information to come to their conclusions that Christie is free and clear and did not know about the lane closures.

National Radio and Television Commentator Dee Dee Benkie chimed in to discuss how she thinks the governor is handling the situation.

“The way that he handled it is, I think stellar. How can he handle it any better? It’s just in New Jersey. It’s the democrats in New Jersey who want to hang him and they’re not going to be able to. And you know they’re going to look stupid because Gov. Christie is going to come out of this and he’s going to be a presidential candidate,” Benkie stated.

In reaction to the Gibson, Dunn and Crutcher law firm report, State Senator Loretta Weinberg, who is the Co-Chair of the legislative committee investigating bridgegate, also had a held press conference in her office to address the findings.

“I characterized it what I think it was and that is that, the governor got what he paid for,” Weinberg explained.

Weinberg also discussed how Gibson, Dunn and Crutcher, the law firm Christie hired, had access to more documents and information from the governor and his administration than the legislative committee and she did.

“They did and we have subpoenaed apparently many of the documents that we’re just getting today. Which were somehow by accident held up until Mr. Mastro can do his public relations,” Weinberg explained.

As the 2014 midterm elections are quickly approaching, Benkie thinks that after all the issues from the scandal are behind him, Christie is “going to be such a rock star” and that people in other states are going to want him to come in and “talk about how he took out the democrats”.

“I think the democrats of New Jersey should be ashamed of themselves because they’ve absolutely treated Governor Christie with no respect, they’ve been wrong, and it’s just a joke to the rest of the country. So I think he’ll take a major role and the democrats are doomed,” Benkie predicted.

Christie isn’t necessarily in the clear yet. There are a lot of moving parts with the bridgegate scandal and the new report. There’s new buzz on Twitter regarding the Diane Sawyer interview with Christie. Sawyer shines light onto the issues of how “aids and appointees would have a personal annoyance and therefore shut down the biggest bridge in the world.” Christie explained his position.

“When things were first reported I said ‘This can’t possibly be true’. Because who would do something like that. Sometimes people do inexplicably stupid things and so that’s what makes it so hard then as the guy in charge. None of it made any sense to me and to some extent still does not,” Christie explained.

Some may question why the people who were hired, appointed and trusted within Christie’s inner circle had the ability to do something like this under the governor’s watch? That gap seems to be widened between Christie and the staff. For some, the situation is made hard to believe, but Christie proved he can handle the tough situations he’s placed in as governor.
