NYC man thanks hospital staff for saving son hurt in East Harlem explosion

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

An apparent gas explosion leveled two buildings and turned an East Harlem neighborhood into a disaster zone three weeks ago. Eight people died, dozens were hurt.

A father who suffered tragic losses in the East Harlem blast is speaking out for the first time about the struggles his surviving son is facing. Jose Cecilio Hernandez sat next to his son's doctor and through a translator thanked the entire Harlem Hospital staff for saving the life of Oscar, his 15-year-old son.

Dr. Arthur Cooper says the boy survived the explosion because of police officers who rushed him to Harlem Hospital and the medical staff who immediately treated life-threatening injuries.

Hernandez has been at his son's bedside constantly, even as he grieves the deaths of his wife and daughter in the explosion. With all the love and care, the outlook for the teen is bright.

It appears the subway bedbug problem we've been reporting is getting worse. Commuters already have to contend with sweltering platforms, scurrying rats and packed train cars, and now there's another transit woe: fear of bedbugs.
