Jersey City High School Brawl Caught On Tape - My9 New Jersey

Jersey City High School Brawl Caught On Tape

Posted: Updated:
Jersey City, New Jersey (My9NJ) - Fists were flying as a brawl broke out in the hall of Jersey City’s Dickinson High School last week. Video of the brawl show images of Principal MaryJo Trusso getting tossed to the side as she attempts to break it up.

City Councilman Rich Boggiano wonders why he’s only hearing about it now.

“I have asked for police reports and so far I haven’t seen anything. All I know is that I think this whole situation was mishandled. These fights go on continuously. There’ve been fights in the streets and it has to stop,” he explained.

In an emailed statement, Jersey City Board of Education spokeswoman MaryAnn Dickar said: “Disciplinary actions were taken against the 16 students involved and no student injuries were reported.”

Now the school has decided to organize a task force on Climate and Culture.

Parents who were reached for comment, some of whom are alumni of the school, said that Dickinson’s always been a tough place. A lot of the students come from the projects right across the street.

“When my younger brother came here it was the same way…We think they should have more security in the building, but hey,” one local resident said.

Another parent explained that Dickinson High School has a good heart and that there’s an education to be had for students who do want to learn.

“Dickinson’s one of the best schools in Jersey City for education as far as public schools. ‘Cause if you look at Lincoln, Ferris and Snyder academics are good, but Dickinson has high academics,” he said.

Other Jersey City sources have said that other high schools in town have similar problems with fighting and some of those are even reported to be gang-related.

Some residents of West New York, New Jersey are happy with their beautiful views of Manhattan, but aren’t too happy about the noise that is coming over from the city. Residents who live at the Hudson Club apartment complex at Port Imperial say that the music that reportedly comes from a new concert hall at Pier 97 across the Hudson River in New York City is affecting their quality of life.
