Berks County Man Charged In Craigslist Murder

Posted: Updated:
BERKS COUNTY, Pa. -

Police charged a Berks County man with homicide and other offenses in the April 8th 2014 fatal shooting of an Allentown man.

At about 1:09 a.m. on April 9, 2014, Allentown police responded to the 600 block of North Nelson Street in Allentown to check on the welfare of Eric S. Ervin, 41,who was reported missing by his girlfriend.

Police located Ervin, who had a gunshot wound to his body, in his enclosed work trailer that he used for his Aces High mobile auto detailing business.

After further investigation, police noticed Ervin's car, 2003 silver BMW 745 LI series, was missing.

Ervin's girlfriend told police that he advertised the vehicle for sale on Craigslist.

A man with a 347 telephone area code expressed interest in purchasing the vehicle and had made arrangements to see the vehicle.

After police determined the 347 area code number was in contact with Ervin, they obtained tracking information for the phone.

The cell phone for the number was located in Reading in the area of the 100 block of South Fourth Street at 9:30 a.m. on April 9, 2014,

The BMW was stopped, and police identified the operator was identified as Tyrell Ronald Young, 27.

"This case was essentially solved within eight hours of discovery of the body, thanks to good police work," Lehigh County District Attorney James Martin said.

Tyrell Ronald Young, has been charged with homicide, robbery, illegally possessing a firearm, theft of a vehicle and receiving stolen property relating to a vehicle and a firearm.

"From my stand point, just being able to provide some closure to a family matters," Allentown Police Chief Joel Fitzgerald said.

Fitzgerald said Ervin appeared to meet Young during daylight at his business.

He always advises meeting in well lit, out in the open places when using sites like Craigslist, but sometimes that's not enough.

"Perhaps even in front of a police station. We're not going to stop internet commerce, but what we can do is encourage people to conduct those transactions in maximum areas of safety," Fitzgerald said.

Ervin's mother told Fox 29 over the phone that they're heartbroken, and this is now the second child they will have to bury.

Court documents said Young has been denied bail.
