Hundreds gather at vigil for Steven Utash

Posted: Updated:
DETROIT (WJBK) - Members of the community gathered Thursday night at a vigil for Steven Utash, the driver who was beaten by a mob of people after he struck a boy who suddenly ran into the street.

The attack happened more than a week ago when Utash immediately stopped and got out of his truck. When he went to check on the 10-year-old boy's condition, a group of 10 - 12 people gathered and beat Utash with their fists and feet.

Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan joined clergy and Utash's family Thursday evening at Historic Little Rock Baptist Church in Detroit on Woodward Avenue. The church is approximately 10 miles west of where the incident took place near the intersection of Morang Drive and Balfour Road.

Deborah Hughes also made remarks. She is credited with helping save Utash's life when she confronted and reportedly broke up the mob.

Since the attack, five people have been charged and authorities are still seeking others.

A 16-year-old was charged as a juvenile earlier today with assault and a hate crime. FOX 2 legal analyst Charlie Langton says the charge of ethnic intimidation is the first hate crime-related charge in the case which has gained national attention.

Seventeen-year-old Bruce Wimbush Jr., 30-year-old Wonzey Saffold, 24-year-old James Davis and an unidentified fifth suspect have been charged with Assault with Intent to Murder and Assault with Intent to Do Great Bodily Harm. The fifth suspect is expected to be arraigned Friday. Wimbush, Saffold and Davis were arraigned earlier this week, received $500,000 bonds and are due back in court April 21.
