NYC bartenders are among America's best

Jack McGarry is shaking up the bartending scene one drink at a time.

"There's nothing more special than when someone gets a drink and they're loving it," McGarry said. "That's what it's all about."

Born and raised in Ireland, he is now the brains behind all 72 cocktails at the Dead Rabbit on Water Street in the Financial District. Recently, McGarry received a huge honor. He was rated No. 1 on The Daily Meal's list of the 25 best bartenders in the United States.

"To be crowned number one on that list was very special," he said.

One of his most popular drinks is the head of steam -- his version of a classic manhattan.

"We're all about Irish whiskey here and demonstrating the diversity of it," McGarry said.

This one is made with Irish whiskey, sherry, chocolate bitters, and other unique flavors.

"We finish it off with orange zest," McGarry said. "And that's the head of steam."

Leo Robitschek is also on the list. You can find him behind the bar at the chic NoMad Hotel in the Flatiron District.

"With cocktails, you only get one shot," Robitschek said. "Somebody walks in, they come in and order a cocktail off your list, that's their first and sometimes their last impression of you."

Robitschek made an impression on us with his signature cocktail.

"We're making a cocktail called the sons of liberty," he said. "It's basically a variation of a whiskey sour."

It's made with apple brandy, whiskey, egg whites, and an Earl Grey simple syrup among other ingredients.

"It's all about details and love, to be honest," he said. "It's all what you put into it."

And Ivy Mix -- yes, that's her real name -- mixed her way to the top of the list.

"The real kicker is how do you make this exceptional?" she said. "How do you break the mold, in a delicious way? And a beautiful way. You got to make sure it looks good, takes good."

Mix works at the Clover Club in Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn. Her specialty is the la piñata, a drink she created using her favorite spirit, mescal, grilled pineapple syrup, and some nutmeg.

So raise your glasses to these three bartending stars. And make sure to try out some of their creations. Just not all at once!
