Giant Whale Pulled Out Of Jersey City Harbor

Posted: Updated:
Jersey City, New Jersey (My9NJ) - A whale that was found early this week dead in the New York Harbor was transported yesterday to the Caven Point Marine Terminal in Jersey City.

Chris Gardner with the United States Army Corps of Engineers said that they successfully extracted the massive giant from the water around 8:00am yesterday morning.

“As you can see it’s very large and presents a potential hazard to navigation so we worked with the Coast Guard to secure it,” he explained.

Gardner said that members of NOAA, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, will perform a necropsy or animal autopsy on the mammal to determine the exact cause of death.

Jay Pagel with Brigantine Marine Mammal Stranding Center explained what exactly a necropsy entails and what it is they are looking for.

“We’re working to necropsy this animal and look inside. We’ll take samples of different organs, look for any indication, we’ll examine the ship strike area, look for breaks, bleeding, hemorrhaging, and things like that. It could have been diseased, it could have been sick before it was struck. It could have died at sea because of the illness and then subsequently struck by the ship,” he said.

Determining the whale’s cause of death is no easy feat, but either was getting the massive mammal out of the water. Pagel said that this kind of thing doesn’t happen all the time in the Garden State and usually whales found in this condition have been eaten by sharks and it’s nearly impossible to do any research on them.

“This is kind of a unique experience and we’re trying to learn as much as we can about these animals from incidences like this,” he said.

Those on the scene yesterday described the situation as extremely gruesome with blood and whale parts all over the place, not to mention a horrific smell excreting from the dead mammal.

After the necropsy is complete, Global Waste Management will dispose of the whale parts in a pre-dug hole at a landfill in Kearny, New Jersey.
