Firefighter accused of driving truck while drunk

Posted: Updated:

The town of Elmwood Park relies on about 75 to 100 volunteer firefighters for emergencies.

Russell Fenn, IV is one of those volunteer firefighters. He was driving the department’s only ladder truck and crashed it into utility poles. The other firefighter in the truck with him was taken to the hospital and treated for minor injuries.

Police charged Fenn with driving under the influence and said that his blood alcohol level was twice the legal limit.

I chased this to Company 4 where the truck came from. No one was there because the volunteer firefighters, while on call 24/7, they come to the firehouse mostly on calls to get their equipment and head out.

I chased this to Elmwood Park’s municipal building where I spoke to borough administrator Keith Kazmark. He said that the town has now banned the consumption of alcohol at all fire houses and Russell Fenn has been suspended.

"Immediately after the accident, Chief Scott Muttel, our fire chief here in Elwood Park immediately suspended all alcohol consumption at the fire houses. That includes fire house that does have liquor license. Any alcohol removed from all facilities. That suspension is indefinite," Kazmark says.

There was a recent fire where they had to rely on another town’s ladder truck.
