Drought leads to discovery of remains in Lake Granbury

Posted: Updated:

The remains of a woman missing since 1979 were found inside of a truck partially exposed in Lake Granbury because of low water levels.

The Hood County Sheriff's Office said a Granbury city employee noticed the 70s model Chevy truck near the lake bridge on Highway 377 on Thursday.

Investigators found skeletal remains inside the cab and evidence suggesting they belonged to Helen Holladay, who was 45 years old when she was reported missing in September of 1979.

Police at the time suspected Helen's husband, Herman Holladay, in her disappearance.

Neighbors in Whippoorwill Bay said they heard a loud argument. They said they saw Helen take off in her truck with Herman in hot pursuit.

But Herman was never charged and has since passed away.

In 1996 FOX 4 reported that a dive team was searching Lake Granbury for Helen's truck because someone had found a full wheel and tire in the water. There was a drought that year and the lake was about 6 feet below normal.

One of Helen's two surviving daughters said at the time that she hoped the search would end 17 years of agony and uncertainty. She had to wait another 17 years, but may now get closure.

The remains will be sent to a lab and compared to DNA for a positive identification.
