Florida Man Lives With Two Seven Foot Alligators

Posted: Updated:
Alligators aren't really a rare sight in Florida but what would you do if you found out two of them were living comfortably in your neighbor's backyard?

According to Florida Fish and Wildlife, the man who owns the gators brought them here six years ago and has had them living behind this six foot fence.

Horace Burch has lived here since 1975.

He's seen a lot of people come and go, but never alligators.

Burch says, “Ah, little surprised that's all. It doesn't really shock me or anything like that. I'm the type of fella, he does what he wants to over there and I do what I want to as long as he doesn't bother me with loud noises and barking dogs."

Neighbors we talked to didn't seem all that worried about these two seven footers living just a yard away that were raised like pets in this family's back yard.

Florida Fish and Wildlife talked with the owners, who are out of town, and told them the gators cannot stay.

The city ordinance doesn't allow it and Florida Fish and Wildlife says you'd have to have a state permit and a lot bigger property to have these gators on your land.

"Once gators reach 4.5 feet they were required to be on a minimum of 2 acres of land,”explains, Rick Brown of Florida Fish and Wildlife

For now the gators will stay, at least until the owners get back from vacation next week.

Brown continues, “my opinion at the present time is the alligators do not pose a threat of escaping the property they don't pose any danger to the public and they appear quite healthy."

But they will be moved.   It's just an issue of whether the owner intends to keep them and find a bigger property to house them.

Florida Fish and Wildlife will be meeting with owner of the gators when he gets back in town, but for now they are staying put.
