Wildfire Torches Over 500 Acres In Ocean County

Posted: Updated:
Toms River, NJ (My9NJ) - Over 500 acres have burned down from a wildfire in Berkeley, New Jersey causing nearly 600 residents to be temporarily displaced. Over the weekend, locals like Toms River resident Rick Low said that he remains concerned over some of the areas that may still be smoking and are a potential hazard for future fires.

“You see here, you got these little hot-spots, so they are gonna police it all day. I’ll tell you one thing too; the firefighters did an outstanding job. In this area you don’t have city water so they have to rely on tanks and pumpers and that kind of thing,” he explained.

Unlike Toms River, Berkeley doesn’t have a municipal water supply so there is an additional concern that responders will run out of water to fight the blaze.

Firefighters actually dug up small trenches along the 500 acres to try and save homes should a new fire erupt.

There has been speculation that this wildfire could have started from cigarette butts found outside one of the local schools, but there is nothing confirmed at this time.
