Gas Leak At The College Of New Jersey Prompts Evacuations

A gas leak that caused evacuations on a construction site at The College of New Jersey has been capped, police said Monday afternoon.

The leak was reported shortly before 11:30 a.m., and PSEG was later reported to be on site and evaluating the situation. The minimum time to repair was estimated to be 90 minutes.

TCNJ says a contractor working at the Campus Town construction site hit a gas main. The initial evacuation order was later expanded to include the AIMM Building, Music Building, and Armstrong Hall. "Occupants should move to the center of campus," the college said.

Members of the college community were urged to avoid parking lots 1-7 near the Campus Town site, students not yet on campus were urged not to come, and "Classes in Loser Hall, Business Building, Bliss Hall, AIMM Building, Music Building and Armstrong Hall are canceled until further notice," the university said.

All other campus buildings are open and operating normally.

According to the Ewing Police Department's Facebook page, "Businesses and houses are being evacuated in the immediate area of Campus Court and Pennington Road (4,000 yard diameter). Pennington Road is shut down from Carlton to Green Lane."

But just after 1 p.m. police tweeted that the gas leak had been capped by PSEG, and a short time later they said Route 31 would be opening to all traffic, although the northbound side would have a right lane closure near the campus as a gas crew completed its work.
