Mr. Mom Facing Possible Jail Time For Unpaid Alimony

Posted: Updated:
Chris DeYoung was married for 22 years, he has two sons and once had a successful career in the fixed income bond market.

When DeYoung’s marriage ended in April, 2011, he was responsible to pay nearly $3,000 a month in alimony for the next 12 years. He says that as difficult as that was he was happy to pay and even gave his wife the $3,000 checks to get through all of 2011, just so he didn’t risk being late.

Unfortunately, he lost his job in January of 2012 and everything changed. DeYoung says he’s now at home, looking for work, but he’s primarily taking care of his two boys and even refers to himself as “Mr. Mom”. He currently has 100% custody of one of the boys and 75% custody of the other.

However, once his severance expired, he could no longer make those alimony payments and is now behind by thousands of dollars. Now, on May 5th he has to go to an enforcement hearing and if he doesn’t pay-up then he’s going to have to go to jail.

“This is now a family that will be turned upside down and I don’t know what the implications are for my sons,” DeYoung said.

He previously tapped into his 401K to make payments, but in the divorce settlement, his 401K was supposed to be protected as a result of the agreement. Now he is being told that if he doesn’t tap into that 401K, he’ll go to jail.

“There’s a line in the sand here, and I may be spending some time in jail,” DeYoung concluded.

DeYoung’s ex-wife says that all of the allegations he’s currently making are being litigated.

The town of Hoboken, New Jersey is cracking down on Uber cars driving in and picking up passengers in the city. Uber is an app that you can use to request a car service to pick you up, but city officials say they are not licensed to operate in town. Marcus Enriquez was actually thrown out of an Uber car by a Hoboken police officer. He said he was on his way to work outside of the Hoboken taxi stand when a cop knocked on the window, kicked him out of the car and ticketed the Uber driver.
