Baby Receives Life-Saving Liver Transplant

Posted: Updated:

Miami-FL-A baby with liver cancer received a life-saving transplant on Wednesday.

Two months after welcoming baby Makinley into the world, Nicki and Michael Edwards found out their daughter had a common form of liver cancer in children.

She immediately began chemotherapy, but her condition did not improve.

Three months later she was referred to Holtz Children's Hospital at the University of Miami Jackson Memorial Medical Center.

They put her on the liver transplant list, and in February the transplant was done.

Her parents are grateful for the treatment they received, and understand what had to be done so their daughter could live.

"This is a devastating experience to go through as a parent, you want the best for your kid and you'll do anything to save their life. The emotional rollercoaster for both me and Nicki over the last eight months and the decisions we've had to make was very difficult. And also the part that comes along with, you know you are receiving an organ from another child from a family that has lost a child so that is also something that is difficult to come to grips with," said father, Michael Edwards, at a press conference.

Makinley recently completed her last dose of chemo and is currently in remission.
