NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

The Lenox Hill Hospital emergency room has definitely seen a spike lately in the number of patients with the flu, which is unusual for this time of year. What's worse, the type of flu going around is a serious one.

This week, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention put out a map showing that New York, Connecticut, and Rhode Island are experiencing widespread cases of the flu. Meanwhile, the rest of the country has a relatively low number. So what's going on?

Dr. Robert Glatter, an emergency room physician at Lenox Hill, says the type of flu going around is a more severe strain. He says the B strain can cause higher fever, more back pain, more chills, and more muscle aches than the A strain. Even the flu shot is not a 100 percent guarantee you won't get sick.

Most New Yorkers we spoke to say though when it comes to the flu, they take no chances. But some told us they never get a flu shot.

So what can you do to percent from catching the flu? Experts say get a flu shot, wash your hands often, sneeze or cough into your elbow not hands, get lots of sleep, and eat right.

In 2013, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo created a state panel to investigate public corruption, called the Moreland Commission. But the governor is accused of interfering with investigations and compromising the commission's work. Republican Astorino, who is running against Cuomo, claimed Cuomo didn't hand over evidence to State Police. Astorino wants a special prosecutor to find out if any state and federal laws were broken.
