9/11 gift shop items called 'disrespectful'

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) - When the National September 11 Memorial Museum opens to the public later this week, visitors will have the chance to purchase items from the gift shop.

The money raised will help pay for the privately owned museum's operation. While defraying costs by selling items is not unusual, the type of items being sold is.

Some victims' family members say they are insulted by the disrespectful and distasteful items placed on hallowed grounds.

Those items range from caps, shirts, coats and other clothing with '9/11' emblazoned across the front. Even dog vests are for sale.

The museum representatives says the items were chosen carefully and respectfully.

The steel and glass museum which opens to the public on Wednesday holds heart-wrenching artifacts, including mangled World Trade Center steel and personal mementos from the tragic day.

A dedication ceremony was held last week in the cavernous room inside the museum known as Foundation Hall.

It appears the subway bedbug problem we've been reporting is getting worse. Commuters already have to contend with sweltering platforms, scurrying rats and packed train cars, and now there's another transit woe: fear of bedbugs.

Heavy thunderstorms swept through the tri-state on Sunday causing flash floods and lightning strikes that injured 3 people. The three men were struck at Orchard Beach in the Bronx Sunday afternoon and were being treated at a local hospital. Meanwhile, various Labor Day weekend celebrations were interrupted, delayed and even canceled as the U.S. Open tennis tournament had to be postponed and the Electric Zoo musical festival on Randall's Island had to be prematurely shut down.
