Getting Results: North Philadelphia Resident Fed Up With Sinkhole

Posted: Updated:

A frustrated homeowner in North Philadelphia called Fox 29 to get results, he says a quick fix on a sinkhole didn't get the job done.

The hole on the 4100 block of North Broad Street was patched for the Broad Street Run. However, neighbors say it's already sinking again, and they want something done about it.

Fox 29's Thalia Perez reports.

"They removed my concrete, dug their hole and left it just like that for the last 3 and a half months," said homeowner Albert Finney.

Finney says Verizon has left him to fend for himself after crews doing work on underground lines, dug a massive hole in the sidewalk in front of his house back in February.

Finney claims those crews destroyed half of the walkway and damaged his plumbing system.

"My plumbing began to back-up into the house and I notified Verizon," said Finney.

According to Finney, a huge dirt pile was covering his "vent."

He also says $2,700 later a plumber unclogged it. But now, the hole is still there.

He says he's still waiting for Verizon to pour concrete and seal it up.

“My concern is someone is gonna fall," said Finney.

Finney says on May 4th, just before the Broad Street Run, he got some good news that crews were returning to finish up repairs. However, he maintains it was just a quick fix because they paved asphalt over the hole and now it's sinking.

"I would never imagine that Verizon would come out to someone's private property and done this and then left it unfinished," said Finney.

Finney placed a cone in the softest spot and caution tape all around, so no one gets hurt, but says he wants the cable giant to do the right thing.

“You need to come and finish the work that you started. It's very unfair as a homeowner to have to endure this mess," said Finney.

Good news, Fox 29 spoke with a Verizon spokesman and they're coming out to fix the sinkhole in the next few days. As far as the plumbing goes, they say it's due a pre-existing condition and it's not their responsibility.

Update: During our 6 p.m. broadcast, crews were on the scene, fixing the sinkhole.
