DelDOT Issues Special Travel Alert Due To Bee Swarms

Posted: Updated:
NEWARK, Del. - DelDOT issued a Special Travel Alert Wednesday morning, for New Castle County travelers. Motorists are advised to keep their vehicle windows closed, and refrain from making any unnecessary stops in the areas of I-95 and Route 141, and I-95 and Route 896.

Nearly 20 million bees are swarming a stretch of I-95 after a tractor trailer carrying bees overturned in the area in Newark, Delaware, on Tuesday.

State police say the truck, which was heading from Florida to Maine, lost control and tipped over.

Beekeepers are estimating somewhere between 16 and 20 million bees in 460 hives.

Fire crews had sprayed water in a pattern to try to suppress the bees.

The crew consisted of 3 men who have been stung 50-100 times each, drivers have also been stung by the bees.

Police say the trucks driver, Adolpho Guerra, has been cited for unsafe shifting load/cargo as a result of the incident.

This is the first time Delaware has used their "Bee Swarm Removal Plan" in 14 years.
