War Hero Speaks To South Jersey School Students

Posted: Updated:
SEWELL, N.J. -

An American Hero shared his inspirational story with some school children at Orchard Valley Middle School in Sewell, N.J., just one day before his Memorial Day weekend wedding!

Sgt. Brian Williams, is a 13-year military veteran, who had a leg amputated and spent a year and a half in rehab.

His canine partner was there to help him get through it all.

What happened in Afghanistan just over two years ago on April 25, 2012, still brings him to tears.

"We were on this big mission searching for I.E.D.'s, which are explosives, and I have my military working dog with me, Carly," Sgt. Williams explains.

Carly went into a vacant building and never came out.

Sergeant Williams went in to find out what was wrong.

Then, everything went dark.

"Everything turned brown, everything," he explains while fighting back tears. "I remember hovering for a long period of time like everything was frozen. And when I landed I was conscious from that point on. I looked down everything was missing down past my knee."

His left leg had been blown off, but Carly was alive, and she helped him get through the subsequent 15 surgeries and 500 hours of rehabilitation.

Recognizing their bond, the Air Force then made a rare decision, to make Carly, Sgt. William's personal service dog.

Carly was by his side seven- months later, when the Air Force awarded Williams the Bronze Star and Purple Heart.

Williams now trains other military dogs out of joint base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst.

He also makes public appearances such as this one in Sewell, not only to inspire young people, but to help them recognize all they have, even if it means taking time out on the eve of his wedding day.
