Heavy downpours spark flash flooding

Posted: Updated:
A strong storm is moving across the Tristate on Friday evening, prompting the National Weather Service to issue several weather alerts for New Jersey, New York, and Connecticut.

Severe thunderstorm warnings and flash flood warnings are in effect for several counties.

"Excessive runoff from heavy rainfall will cause flooding of small creeks and streams, urban areas, highways, streets and underpasses, as well as other drainage areas and low lying spots," the NWS said in a release.

Indeed, reports of flooded roadways stranding motorists have come in from Newark, Jersey City, Clifton, and Secaucus.

Authorities warn motorists to never drive through flooded streets because even a few inches of water can stall your car and sweep you away.

Arrivals and departures stalled at Newark, Kennedy, and LaGuardia airports while the area took the brunt of the storm.

Reports of hail have come in from New Jersey and New York.
