DETROIT (AP) -- Federal prosecutors are recommending a 40-month prison sentence for a man who grew up with former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick, worked in his inner circle and became an important witness at his corruption trial.

Derrick Miller is returning to court Thursday. He's asking Judge Nancy Edmunds to keep him out of prison as a reward for his cooperation.

The government says it believes Miller deserves a break but still is calling for prison.

Miller testified at Kilpatrick's trial, telling jurors how he passed bribes from city contractors, including $10,000 in a restaurant bathroom.

Federal prosecutors say Miller deserves credit for "truthful, accurate and well-corroborated" testimony. Kilpatrick is serving a 28-year prison sentence.

Miller pleaded guilty in 2011 to taking kickbacks from a real estate broker, money he shared with Kilpatrick.
