End Of An Era For Lakewood’s Tent City

Posted: Updated:
It’s the end of an era for Lakewood’s tent city as a dump truck rolled up in the neighborhood late last week to take even more tents away. Due to a court ruling, tent city was to be shut down come June 1, 2014.

The original census done by Lakewood Township showed that 122 residents resided in the encampment. The majority of those 122 people have been placed in housing, others left on their own volition. Now there are about 15 residents who remain waiting for housing which was supposed to happen by yesterday.

Michael McNiel with the STEPS program said that these people will be placed in housing as soon as possible.

“We are coming off that list that we’re gonna house today and those three will go to Seaside,” he explained.

Lakewood Township has rewarded these residents one year of free housing because there is not a shelter in Lakewood or the surrounding town of Toms River.

One girl's threat to post another girl's nude photos on Instagram led to an investigation that uncovered a teen sexting ring involving six juveniles and four New Jersey towns. Little Falls Detective Sergeant James Briggs said that the two girls that initiated the investigation allegedly dated the same boy at separate times. The boy then passed on nude photos that he received from one of the girls onto the other.
