Recalls on the Road

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA, Ga. -

More than 36 million vehicles with open recalls are on U.S. roads right now, many of them are for sale on the used car market. It's crucial to stay on top of safety information like recalls there are resources to help.

If you're driving a used car or shopping for a used car, knowing the ins and out of that vehicle--including the recall information-- is key to keeping you and your family safe.

Even drivers who work to repair cars, like Midtown Tire's Manager Derek Cassey, must deal with vehicle recalls of their own. "I've got a 2013 Chevy Cruz and I just got a letter in the mail, actually two days ago telling me that there's a recall on a CV Axel on my car," says Midtown Tire Toco Hill Manager Derek Cassey. "I was a little shocked... I was like, man it's a brand new car."

Derek plans to get the recall checked out as soon as possible. "Being aware of what can happen if a CV Axel breaks on your car makes me a little more upset about it."

"The alarming thing about recalls is how many don't get fixed," explains Carfax Public Relations Manager Chris Basso.

Carfax estimates 30 to 35 percent of all recalls go unfixed. "It is dangerous and with so many recalls these days, we've almost become de-sensitized to how vital they are in maintaining the safety, performance and the re-sell value of our cars," adds Basso.

Right now there is no law requiring used car dealers to disclose recalls. Last year there were around 105,000 cars with open recalls for sale online in Georgia.

"This is absolutely a safety issue. We're talking increased risk of crashes, air bag deployments inadvertently, fires...things than put people’s lives at risk," warns Basso.

For example, CarMax is the nation's largest used car seller and although they promise a "125-point Certified Quality Inspection," they say, manufacturers will not let them repair recalls. CarMax, and most dealers do offer a free vehicle history report with recall information and that's where Carfax comes back in.

"Carfax offers free resources for anybody to check their car for a recall. You can go to carfax.com, you can plug in your 17-digit VIN and find out immediately if there's an open recall issued to Carfax for that specific car," adds Basso.

Another great option is an app Fox 5 introduced you to last year, the MyCarfax app for your phone. You put your vehicle information in and it keeps you up to date on maintenance and other issues.

Another great government website is safercar.gov, maintained by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
