Runners Flock To ROC Race In South Philly

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA -

The parking lot at Citizen's Bank Park was filled with people Saturday, but it wasn’t because the Phillies were in town.

Hundreds of runners were bouncing around the sports complex for a good cause.

The ROC Race, which stands for ridiculous obstacle challenge, is a 5k, that's just that...

"You're sprinting, then you're climbing up things, you're jumping over walls,” Sarah Welch said.

While crossing rolling beams, giant wrecking balls or poor balance often created quite a splash.

"That thing was awesome man! Look, I didn't even fall in the water, I had to crawl, but it was cool though,” Dawn Skipworth said.

Then there was a especially tough obstacle, where things usually ended with a face full of inflatable.

"That's a lot harder than it looks, a lot harder. You hit it and you can't hit it right, you just go off,” Bruce Fry said.

The barrier at a section of the race made competitors stay low, or go.

Others got into the swing of things near the middle of the course.

One guy found the footing wasn't easy on the climbing exercise.

"I saw him going over before me and I had to dive, but it didn't work out too well,” Jarrett Alderfer said.

The competitors proved there's no obstacle too high, and no obstacle too tough to finish the course.

Four friends fought through a different kind of obstacle.

Their friend Will recently died of a stroke at 30.

"We were trying to figure out a way to incorporate him in the day and we figured, you might as well just spell out his name,” Michael Drew said.

Another quartet sported Clint Eastwood quotes as they climbed the wall for their dad's birthday.

"So they've gone ahead and made your day?” reporter Drew Dickman asked. “Yes sir,” Rick Tulowitzki said.

Then there were the bizarre costumes on the course...like this group of super heroes.

"How much of your super powers were needed to finish this 5k?” Drew Dickman asked. “Well, the truth is, I don't need any superpowers, all I need is my good wife and life partner. Love,” a man who identified himself as Captain America said.

The runners slipped and slid to the end, soaking in all the glory.

"That was awesome. I like water, it was cool it's a hot day so it was perfect for it,” Taylor Haynes said.

The race benefited the Challenged Athletes Foundation.
