Cop Shoots Pit-Bull After Responding To Dog Complaint

Posted: Updated:
Howell, New Jersey (My9NJ) - Last week Nina Pisozio’s beloved pit-bull Bentley George was shot three times and killed by a Howell Township police officer responding to a report that Bentley had attacked someone.

However, Pisozio said that Bentley wasn’t an aggressive dog and the so-called attack was actually a scratch that someone received that didn’t even require medical treatment. She thinks that even though Bentley allegedly did charge out of the house at the officer, he prematurely decided to shoot and kill the dog just because Bentley was a pit-bull.

There have been several cases across the country where police have shot and killed dogs, specifically pit-bulls, so much so that the Department of Justice has even released a series of videos showing officers how to be prepared to interact with these dogs when they are out on a call.

If you look at pictures of Bentley from his days as a puppy, they paint a picture of a loved dog that appears well adjusted to people.

Chief Buddy Amato from the Monmouth County SPCA released a statement that said: “The police officer was in a bad position. No cop wants to shoot a dog, but he did what he had to do to protect himself. It’s an unfortunate situation but I don't see that the officer had another option.” He also confirmed that he would have done the same thing if put in that situation.

The officer also released a comment about what happened confirming that he was approached by the dog and ultimately did what was necessary to protect himself.

Social media is also buzzing over this incident and comments have represented both sides of the argument. Some people believe the cop was unnecessarily aggressive and others feel that a charging pit-bull leaves the cop no other option but to shoot.

Pisozio says she’ll continue to try and get people to realize that pit-bulls are just dogs like any other canine and society’s fear is what ultimately led to Bentley being killed.

Some residents of West New York, New Jersey are happy with their beautiful views of Manhattan, but aren’t too happy about the noise that is coming over from the city. Residents who live at the Hudson Club apartment complex at Port Imperial say that the music that reportedly comes from a new concert hall at Pier 97 across the Hudson River in New York City is affecting their quality of life.
