Police Respond To 'Swatting' Prank Call In Upper Uwchlan Township

Posted: Updated:
Uwchlan Township Police say they responded to a 'swatting' prank phone call on Monday, which led to a neighborhood lockdown.

"It's kind of a pretty nice neighborhood, so when you hear that stuff going on you're kind of a little taken aback," said resident Dwayne Moseley.

Caught off guard, before a morning walk, Dwayne Moseley found himself on lockdown early Monday morning, along with the rest of his neighbors in the quiet hills of Upper Uwchlan Township.

“There was a good number of people you, obviously the neighborhood was a little abuzz this morning," said Moseley.

SWAT teams had just swarmed a house on the 700 block of North Reeds after a call believed to be from the homeowner saying he just killed his wife and grandson inside, and warned officers not to respond.

"You're afraid you've got someone who was already killed people and has a gun and is looking to get into a shootout with police," said Chester County District Attorney Tom Hogan.

The Chester County DA says the call was bogus, and did not come from the homeowner.

Investigators say it’s part of game known as "swatting" where pranksters try to lure police to potentially violent scenes.

However, SWAT members did not know this was a prank at the time, and even drew weapons on a woman who lived at the house, and happened to be walking her dog.

"Obviously, she was very frightened to all the sudden be confronted by armed men out in the middle of the neighborhood, but to her credit she dealt with it professionally," said Hogan.

"Swatting" is now infamous with celebrities like Ashton Kutcher, Miley Cyrus and Simon Cowell all being targeted at some point.

The DA says there's nothing funny about it, and it could cost someone their life.

"Swatting, there shouldn't be any doubt, this is incredibly foolish, incredibly dangerous and illegal," said Hogan.

Investigators say they know who they are looking for, and the call came from a Skype account.
