3 Deaths In One-Week On NJ Roads

Posted: Updated:
Fort Lee, New Jersey (My9NJ) - There have been three deaths this week alone on New Jersey roads, and yesterday was no exception. Commuters trying to get in and out of New York City experienced hour-long delays on the George Washington Bridge as a result of a fatal tractor-trailer truck accident that happened around 2:00am on the bridge.

State Police confirmed that it took them nine-hours to get to the victims and untangle the two tractor-trailers that were involved in the accident.

By the time commuters got in their cars to head to work, traffic was backed up for miles leaving people stuck at a stand-still.

In addition, just minutes before that truck accident, a man stopped his car in traffic, left it abandoned and committed suicide by jumping off the bridge.

While there was traffic on New Jersey roadways, there was also traffic on Twitter as commuters took to social media to upload pictures of the accident and the massive amounts of traffic, as well as to break up the boredom as they waited to start moving again.

Thousands of people were stuck in this regional gridlock and what is now being described as “carmageddon”. The delays actually trickled off onto nearby roads like I-95, the Garden State Parkway, Tappan Zee Bridge, the Lincoln Tunnel, I-80 and Route 3 which were all jammed up because of the accident on the GWB.

Tom Feeney with the New Jersey Turnpike Authority discussed New Jersey’s highway fatality rate, that’s the number of deaths per million miles traveled and he said that New Jersey’s average is .4 deaths per million miles traveled. The national average is 1.1 deaths per million miles traveled and the surrounding states are actually at .8. So while there will never be no deaths on the roads, these statistics show that the Garden State is consistently home to some of the safest highways traveled in the United States.

Clearly, these numbers do not take away from the tragedy of those lost and injured on New Jersey roadways, like the recent fatal crash involving actor and comedian Tracy Morgan.

The town of Hoboken, New Jersey is cracking down on Uber cars driving in and picking up passengers in the city. Uber is an app that you can use to request a car service to pick you up, but city officials say they are not licensed to operate in town. Marcus Enriquez was actually thrown out of an Uber car by a Hoboken police officer. He said he was on his way to work outside of the Hoboken taxi stand when a cop knocked on the window, kicked him out of the car and ticketed the Uber driver.
