Berlin Township Principal Camps Out For Reading

BERLIN, N.J. - John F Kennedy Elementary School Principal Michael Murphy is making good on a promise to his students for winning a big challenge.

"We had a reading contest and we made our goal so he was going to camp out," said student Alison Lucier.
 
Students at John F. Kennedy Elementary School in West Berlin love to read. In fact, they read 3500 books altogether in just this month alone and, so their principal let them pick their reward.

"I'm pretty nervous. I'm not going to lie to you," laughed Murphy. He's nervous because he'll spent the night in tent on the front lawn of the school.

"This is the first first time I've camped outside and slept outside by myself," he said.

Students came out to wish him luck, and being a good sport Murphy is, he read to them. Principal Murphy says he's been hosting challenges like this all year with one goal in mind; to get kids reading and for them to love reading.

"I wanted to do things they never saw before and really motivate them to read," said Murphy.
