NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) - Former New York Knicks player Metta World Peace teamed up with the New York City Health Department to encourage young New Yorkers to not be afraid or ashamed to get help for depression, stress, and other mental health problems and social issues.

According to a survey on youth risk behavior, 27 percent of public high school students reported feeling sad or hopeless almost every day.

World Peace is featured in the Health Department's public service announcement titled "Open Up, Be Heard." The PSA seeks address the stigma surrounding mental health among young people. The PSA will be featured on social media and also the city's NYC Teen website, which is a resource for young New Yorkers.

"It's so important for our youth to know that if they are having problems, they should talk to someone about it – and the City of New York has free and low cost services available to them," World Peace said in a news release. "It's vital for people to receive services early, before problems become bigger. Prevention and early intervention are key so people can lead more productive, healthier, and happier lives."

World Peace, who grew up in the Queensbridge Houses in Long Island City, has been open about managing his emotions and the how he benefited from seeking help when he was young.
