NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) - Actor Liam Neeson believes Mayor Bill de Blasio is doing "a fine job as mayor" what he can't reconcile is why Hizzoner is going after the horse carriage industry.

"With all the things wrong in New York, it’s like, hello, that’s at the top of your agenda?” Neeson told Good Day NY co-host Rosanna Scotto.

De Blasio vowed he would end the horse carriage rides in New York City as soon as he took office and replace them with electric cars. Both the mayor and Neeson continue to be at odds over the proposed ban.

Supporters, like Neeson, say the horses are doomed and destined for slaughterhouses if they're no longer used to transport tourists and New Yorkers alike. Opponents, including People For the Ethical Treatment of Animals, say using horses is inhumane.

“I use the park every day when I’m here. I’ve got to know some of these riders; I’ve got to know some of the horses. I’m from a farming community myself. These people treat these horses like their children. We are trying to save these horses," said Neeson.

Several city council members have visited the stalls where the horses live and most agreed they are well cared for.

"They are pulled around a half mile to a quarter mile on a flat horizontal track. It’s iconic. It’s a part of New York. It's been there since before Abraham Lincoln was inaugurated," said Neeson.

In a poll released in April, nearly two-thirds of New Yorkers were in favor of keeping the horses at least in Central Park and were lukewarm on de Blasio's plan to put the horse drivers to work instead giving rides in old-timey electric cars.
