City settles lawsuit with "Central Park 5"

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

It's the end of a bitterly fought civil rights lawsuit between the 'Central Park 5' and New York City.

The men have agreed to a $40 million dollar settlement over their wrongful arrests and imprisonment.

All five were found guilty in the brutal 1989 beating and rape of a female jogger in Central Park.

A judge vacated their convictions in 2002 after an investigation determined they did not commit the crime. The rape was later found to have been committed by a convicted rapist and murderer who admitted his role in the heinous crime. He is serving a life sentence.

The proposed settlement averages roughly $1 million for each year of imprisonment for the men. That amount would suggest that the city was poised to pay one of the men, Kharey Wise, who spent about 13 years in prison, more than it has in any wrongful conviction case.

The other four men, Kevin Richardson, Antron McCray, Yusef Salaam and Raymond Santana Jr. served about seven years in prison.

Things are looking up for cute little Cami King. Not only is her cancer in remission, she also just got to meet Mickey, Minnie and Elmo in Times Square. But, if you can believe it, there's something else this 4-year-old is even more excited about: Times Square is going gold. The chairman of the Times Square Advertising Coalition announced the crossroads of the world is going to light up in gold to raise awareness for pediatric cancer research.

It appears the subway bedbug problem we've been reporting is getting worse. Commuters already have to contend with sweltering platforms, scurrying rats and packed train cars, and now there's another transit woe: fear of bedbugs.
